It was a cool start to the week here in the Northeast, but it turned quite summer-like on Friday as afternoon highs pushed well into the 70s and even a few 80s. We do have a decent weekend ahead as well, with just a slight chance for some rain. We'll get into the forecast in a minute, but first, let's check on those average temperatures for mid-May.
Average High | Average Low | |
Boston | 66 | 50 |
Hartford | 72 | 48 |
New York City | 71 | 54 |
Philadelphia | 74 | 54 |
Baltimore | 74 | 52 |
Washington, DC | 76 | 57 |
OK, back to the forecast. After a round of showers and some gusty thunderstorms Friday night, skies will clear along the I-95 corridor in time for the start of the weekend. And although a cold front will slice across the area early Saturday, we will still enjoy a mild afternoon. This will be helped out by a fair amount of sunshine as well. Here is a look at forecast temperatures at 2 PM on Saturday. Very close to normal for mid-May.

By Sunday, the wind will turn more out of the east and onshore. This will drive cooler, Atlantic air back into the Northeast along with clouds. As a result, temperatures will hold in the 60s for the most part from Boston to Washington, DC. Also, there could be a few showers that develop Sunday afternoon, but this will be mainly confined to areas from the Hudson Valley south to Maryland. Folks from New York City to eastern Massachusetts will likely stay dry until at least Sunday night. Either way, it's not a washout anywhere in the Northeast and any rain would be light. Here is a look at those expected cooler temps for 2 PM Sunday.

So, if you want to enjoy some sunshine and temps in the 70s, get outside on Saturday. If you want cooler weather with not a lot of sun, Sunday is the best day of the weekend for you. Either way, continue to practice social distancing, but do try to get out and enjoy what Mother Nature has in store. Next week, the overall pattern turns unsettled once again and we may be dealing with some bouts of heavy rain.
