Is Next Tuesday's Storm the One to Watch?

March 8, 2017 // Article by: Rob Reale

While the weekend storm now looks like a miss, that has implications on our next storm, focused around Tuesday of next week (March 14th). Because the prior storm will be further south, colder air will build in its place this weekend into the start of next week. That will lead into what also has the potential to be a big storm, and could mean significant snow for parts of the Northeast.

A few days ago in Winter Risk™, we discussed that a large storm is likely next week, but will mainly be for climatologically colder areas (NW MD into parts of PA, NW NJ, Hudson Valley and New England - especially interior parts). That same thinking holds true, though with a good amount of cold air leading up to it, it will at least put the I-95 corridor in the game to see some wintry weather from the storm in addition to rain.

So what can we expect? There is a high confidence a storm will move through the region (as opposed to the weekend storm which was trending south). The question with this one is what track does the low pressure take, and that will be the difference between a snow / mix to rain for the NW areas and all rain along the I-95 corridor, versus a perfect track that would be mainly snow for the NW areas, and a snow / mix to rain for the I-95 corridor. The image below shows one of the latest model outputs for snowfall with this storm. THIS IS NOT A FORECAST, but does show that this storm has the potential to be big, and heavily favored towards those NW areas. The overall time frame to watch is from Monday Night to Tuesday Night.
