After a quiet start to the work week, the weather pattern gets active once again starting Tuesday. In fact, a bout of severe weather is possible Tuesday afternoon as a strong cold front sweeps towards the Northeast. However, we'll get back to the forecast in a minute. While it's not impossible that we still could see snow (mainly just New England), let's take a final look at snowfall statistics for the 2019 - 2020 winter season.
2019 - 2020 Snowfall | Average | |
Boston | 15.8" | 43.6" |
Hartford | 32.5" | 40.4" |
New York City | 4.8" | 25.8" |
Philadelphia | 0.3" | 22.3" |
Baltimore | 1.8" | 20.1" |
Washington, DC | 0.6" | 15.4" |
So, while snowfall was below average for everyone in the Northeast, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. ended up well below normal. And believe it or not, the weather pattern that we have had over the last few weeks would have been very favorable for cold and snow in the winter (but we still saw some last Friday & Saturday).
Anyway, back to the forecast. Tuesday will start out dry for most of the Northeast, but we'll be watching for a line of showers and thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon. Some of the storms will produce strong to possibly damaging winds and maybe even some hail. Here is a look at the simulated radar for 4 PM Tuesday.

The storms on Tuesday will quickly move off the coast by evening followed by a fairly cold (by late April standards) and windy air mass. Interior parts of the Northeast may even see some flurries Tuesday night. This will be followed by a brisk and blustery Wednesday as temperatures struggle to climb out of the 40s in some locations.
Thursday may start out with a few light showers as a warm front lifts through the region, but rain chances will increase from south to north by Thursday night as a storm system heads for the area. This storm looks to bring a soaking rain into Friday, but there are signs that it will be moving a good pace, so it may exit off the coast by Friday afternoon. Here is a look at total rainfall expected from the Thursday night - Friday system.

That's it for now. Hopefully we'll break out of this wet and active pattern as we head into May which is only about a week and a half away. Have a great week everyone and stay safe and healthy.
