A Mild Start to 2022...

December 31, 2021 // Article by: Brad Miller

It's been rather mild across the Northeast these final days of 2021, and it doesn't look like much will change for the the start of the new year.  However, it does get rather cold as we head back to work and school, but more on that in a minute.  First, let's  look at average temperatures for New Year's Day along the I-95 corridor.

  Average High Average Low
Boston 38 25
Hartford 36 21
New York City 40 30
Philadelphia 42 28
Baltimore 43 27
Washington, DC 45 32

As for the forecast, it will be an unsettled start to 2022 as low pressure slides across the area.  This will result in periods of rain through much of the day and right into New Year's night.  Here is a look at the simulated radar for 10 AM Saturday.

Meanwhile, it will be quite mild here in the Northeast and New England as Saturday afternoon highs will be 15 - 20 degrees above normal.  Check out forecast temperatures for around 1 PM on New Year's Day.

Rain amounts will be about a quarter to half inch in New England, while areas south of New York City to Maryland could eclipse 1" of rainfall.  Here is a general idea of how much rain is expected through Saturday night.

Beyond that, Sunday starts out mild, but temperatures will fall late in the day as a strong cold front sweeps towards the East Coast.  At the same time, we'll be watching a second area of low pressure develop along the cold front.  There is a bit of uncertainty as to how fast this occurs, but there is a chance that the cold air behind the front "catches up" to the moisture.  This would result in a small window of opportunity to snow late Sunday night into Monday.  Here is a look at the GFS weather model for 7 AM Monday.

Again, this is only a possibility as many other forecast models are further east and offshore with this solution.  Either way, the coldest air of the season will overspread the Northeast for Monday.  Check out these temperatures around 1 PM....Brrrrrr !!
